Introduction

Among the remarkable women of early Islam stands Hazrat Umm Sulaym (RA) — a woman of intelligence, courage, and extraordinary faith.

Her story is one of strength, conviction, and emotional mastery.

Early Acceptance of Islam

Umm Sulaym (RA) was among the early converts in Madinah.

Her first husband opposed Islam and eventually left.

But she remained firm in her faith.

The Marriage Proposal That Changed History

When Abu Talha (RA) proposed to her, he was not yet Muslim.

She responded:

“If you accept Islam, that will be my dowry.”

No gold.
No wealth.
No status.

Her mahr was Islam.

Abu Talha accepted Islam and they married.

This remains one of the most powerful marriage stories in Islamic history.

Her Service in Battle

She accompanied the Prophet (PBUH) in battles:

  • Caring for the wounded

  • Providing water

  • Supporting the Muslim army

She even carried a dagger during battle for protection.

Her Extraordinary Patience

One of the most powerful incidents in her life was when her child passed away.

She did not immediately inform her husband.

She prepared him emotionally and then gently explained that Allah had taken back what He entrusted to them.

The Prophet (PBUH) later prayed for blessings upon their marriage.

They were granted another son — Abdullah — whose descendants became scholars.

Lessons From Her Life

  • Faith over wealth

  • Emotional intelligence in crisis

  • Patience during tragedy

  • Strength with dignity

She demonstrated that true power lies in composure and trust in Allah.

Umm Sulaym (RA) was not only a companion — she was a strategist of faith, a pillar of patience, and a model of spiritual strength.

Her life teaches us that character, not comfort, defines greatness.
